If the map is not set to orient itself with the compass, (1) line up the map along the ruler using one or two fingers from your position (blue arrow) to the destination (red arrow) where you want to go. (2) Turn the phone/tablet such that the compass needle fits into the arrow that shows the north of the map. Then the ruler line points at the destination in the real world, indicated by the green arrow in the figure.

If the map is set to orient itself with the compass, i. e. the map is automatically oriented with the real world, just turn the phone/tablet until the ruler line is lined up with your position to your destination. Then the ruler line points at the destination in the real world, indicated by the green arrow in the figure.
